Oh What Do You Do For Singing Time?

Christie Lewis, Alena Taylor, Brenda Robertson

The purpose of music in Primary is to teach our precious children the gospel of Jesus Christ…the melodies, words, and messages of primary songs will stay in their hearts throughout their lives. In D&C 133:33 we read, "And they shall be filled with songs of everlasting joy." How often as adults do we find ourselves humming the familiar tune of a Primary song? Not only does music make learning the gospel more enjoyable, it invites the spirit and creates and atmosphere that is ideal for learning. As children feel the influence of the Holy Ghost through singing, gospel truths are taught and their testimonies are thereby strengthened. Teaching songs and developing new ways to maintain children's attention can be a daunting task. However, as we do so, we can experience great joy. We are greatly blessed as we teach gospel truths and learn from the children's sweet spirits. "For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me." (D&C 25:12)
